Achieving Trash-Free Beaches in Cameroon by 2030

Today, GOOFIRM, through its Nature Conservation Department, in partnership with Association For Community Awareness (ASCOA), carried out a beach cleanup exercise at Limbe Down Beach in commemoration of Cameroon Beach Cleanup Day, under the theme “Achieving Trash-Free Beaches in Cameroon by 2030.” The activity was conducted alongside other environmental NGOs as part of GOOFIRM’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable natural resource management.

The cleanup exercise involved the collection and sorting of waste, including plastics (both degradable and non-degradable) and other solid trash. All collected waste was carefully weighed and set aside for proper management, reinforcing responsible waste handling, data collection, and environmental accountability, key principles of nature conservation.

Nature conservation plays a critical role in keeping beaches clean, as healthy coastal and marine ecosystems support marine life, protect food chains, and act as natural barriers against erosion and pollution. Dirty beaches are largely caused by poor waste disposal practices, plastic pollution, runoff from nearby communities and markets, untreated sewage, tourism activities, fishing operations, and trash transported by rivers and ocean currents. When left unmanaged, this waste threatens marine species through ingestion and entanglement, degrades water quality, disrupts ecosystems, and poses health risks to coastal communities.

Through initiatives like this beach cleanup, GOOFIRM aims to address the root causes of coastal pollution by combining action, awareness, and community engagement, while advocating for improved waste management and environmental responsibility. At the end of the exercise, a certificate of partnership was presented to GOOFIRM and other partnering NGOs by the CEO of ASCOA, in recognition of our collective efforts toward protecting Cameroon’s coastline and advancing the goal of trash-free beaches by 2030.
